CHINESE, Tang Dynasty. Terracotta statuette. 618-907 AD. Height 24cm. Molded buff-colored terracotta tomb figure of a standing man wearing peaked cloth cap, short tunic with belt and leggings, covering a long undergarment. Figure was glazed originally, mostly now lacking, but traces of white on cap and tunic, and red on undergarment can still be seen. The facial features are clearly not Han Chinese, especially not the prominent nose. Probably a figure of a central Asian trader, sometimes even referred to as "Armenian". Encrusted, some wear and slight chipping. ($500)
