DENMARK. Svend II Estridsen. 1047-1075. AR Pfennig (17mm, 0.84 g). Lund mint. Christ, nimbate, seated facing on throne, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels; curved lines in nimbate cross / Voided long cross with triple crescent ends. Cf. Hauberg 6. VF.
The obverse type is likely copied from the reverse type of the first coins of Estridsen's reign (Hauberg 7), which were themselves copies of Byzantine gold coins of Michael IV (SB 1826 [Michael V]; see M.F. Hendy, "Michael IV and Harald Hardrada," NumChron 1970, pp. 187-97). The reverse type is assimilated from the Anglo-Saxon long cross coinage. All legends were written in clear Latin letters on early issues, but they degraded over time or were written in runes. As such, this particular coin is likely an issue from late in Estridsen's reign.
