BOIOTIA, Federal Coinage. Circa 475-450 BC. AR Obol (0.96 g). Boiotian shield / Wheel of four spokes in incuse square. Head,
Boeotia p. 22; BMC p. 61, 18, pl. IX, 17; Hesperia Art, Bulletin XXI (undated), no. 47 (as Thebes). VF, even grey tone, minor porosity. Very rare. ($200)
Ex Proschowsky Collection (Bruun Rasmussen 245, 10 March 1970), lot 629 (part). The difference between the much rarer Federal reverses with the wheel and the "theta" (
q) reverses of Thebes is quite subtle. One should look for the central pellet (the wheel hub), but make sure it is not a die break.
