BOIOTIA, Federal Coinage. Circa 475-450 BC. AR Obol (0.88 g). Boiotian shield / Wheel of four spokes in incuse square. Head, Boeotia p. 22; BMC p. 61, 18, pl. IX, 17. Good Fine, even dark grey tone, die break on reverse, double struck. Very rare. ($200)

Ex John Work Garrett Collection (Leu and Numismatic Fine Arts 16 October 1984), lot 441 (part; incorrectly attributed to Thebes).

The reverse shows one side of the incuse square superimposed on the previous strike at a slight angle. On this coin the incuse and the wheel in it are appreciably larger than those of the previous lot. It has always been assumed that more globular flans and smaller diameter incuses are earlier.
