BOIOTIA, Federal Coinage. Circa 275-250 BC. AR Hemidrachm (2.52 g). Boiotian shield / Kantharos; thunderbolt above, BO-IW across lower field; all within concave circle. Head, Boeotia p. 54; BMC p. 35, 30; SNG Cop. 172. Good VF, even grey tone. ($200)

Hoard information has recently shown that the thunderbolt issue stands alone and can be dated much later than all the other shield / kantharos hemidrachms. The fabric of these coins confirms this; the shields are in low relief and there is practically no concavity on the reverse of most of them. It is even possible that they were struck after the middle of the century, during the time that Boiotia was under the increasing influence of Macedonia.
