BOIOTIA, Tanagra. Early-mid 4th century BC. AR Obol (0.56 g). Boiotian shield / Forepart of horse left; TA below; all within incuse flat circle. Head, Boeotia p. 52. Good VF, even grey tone. ($200)

Although strictly speaking this and the previous lot are the same variety, it was decided to include them both so that the differences between them can be observed. The shield on this one is of a distinctly different, more refined style and somewhat similar to the shield of the fine style Thespiai stater (see lot 606 below) and the early, very rare Tanagra and Thespiai large bronzes (see lots 307 and 610 below). There is also much more detail in the horse depiction, as if its proportions were more carefully thought out. Generally, a finer and more artistic hand seems to have been at work on this coin.
