BOIOTIA, Thebes. Circa 450-440 BC. AR Hemiobol (0.39 g). Thick, dumpy flan. Half Boiotian shield / Q in square incuse. Unpublished in the standard references. Near Fine, granular surfaces. ($100)

The reverse of this coin as well as the reverses of the following two lots are thought to be a patera but they could also be the initial letter of Thebes. Here the reverse is clearly neither a wheel nor an archaic Q, and the globular fabric suggests an early date. The two lots that follow are of later fabric which means that this very rare "patera" reverse was probably issued in two distinct periods of time.
