CELTIC, Britain. The Iceni. Ecen. Circa 25-38 AD. AV Stater (5.31 g). Interwoven wreaths forming hexagonal frame with three crescents and annulets within; groups of three or four pellets in arcs / ECEN, Celticized horse right with "wishbone" shaped head; pellet-in-annulet above. Hobbs 4032; Van Arsdell 725-1; SCBC 443. CCI 98-0387 (this coin). Good VF, reverse weakly struck, rose gold. Very rare. ($3000)

When Van Arsdell published his work in 1989, only a copper core of an Ecen stater was known. Since then, metal detectorists have found several proper gold specimens. This example was shown to the British Museum in 1994.
