SICILY, Tauromenion. Circa 304-289 BC. AV Tetradrachm - 15 Litrai (1.05 g, 2h). Laureate head of Apollo right; star behind / TAURO-[MENI]-TAN, tripod-lebes. SNG ANS 1119-1120 var. (obv. symbol); SNG Copenhagen 927-928 var. (same). EF. Very rare. ($1500)

Ex ADM Collection (Numismatica Ars Classica P, 12 May 2005), lot 1287; Hess-Leu (27 March 1956), lot 226.

This issue appears to have been adapted from the Apollo / Tripod series of Agathokles of Syracuse (struck circa 306-305 BC). However, this issue at Tauromenion is probably later, as its weight standard is the same as Agathokles' later gold coinage (circa 304-289 BC).
