KINGS of MACEDON. Philip II. 359-336 BC. AR Tetradrachm (14.30 g, 6h). Amphipolis mint. Struck under Kassander or his son, Antipater, circa 323/2-315 BC. Laureate head of Zeus left /
FILIPP-OU, youth on horseback right, holding palm in right hand, rein in left; below, thunderbolt above Z; dolphin below horse's raised foreleg. Le Rider pl. 48, 4; SNG ANS 812. EF, attractive cabinet toning, hairline flan crack. ($1000)
These late issues attributed to Amphipolis may actually be the earliest Celtic imitations of Philip II's tetradrachms. They exhibit a more formalized style, and Philip's name is sometimes, as on this particular issue, broken after the second, rather than the first,
P, which is a very unusual parting from tradition.
