From the Robert Weimer Collection. Ex Sotheby's Zurich (27-28 October 1993) [Athena Fund Sale], lot 442; Numismatic Fine Arts XXV (29 November 1990), lot 87.Unlike the typical Pan head issues that were produced at Amphipolis after 271/0 BC, this issue exhibits a more refined style, a right facing Athena, and a kalathos symbol. Mathisen places this issue at Pella based on the similarity of the known monograms on this issue to those on earlier series at Pella. Also, the configuration of the royal title and name on the reverse is consistent with issues from Pella. The fighting Athena was a traditional symbol of Pyrrhos, his vanquished enemy, and Mathisen contends that this figure represents Antigonos' victory over Pyrrhos, as the Pan head symbolizes Antigonos' victory over the Gauls.
