SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Seleukos I Nikator. 312-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.05 g, 12h). Persid(?) imitation of Susa mint. Head of hero (Alexander or Seleukos?) right, wearing helmet covered with panther skin and adorned with the ear and horns of a bull / BASILEWS SELEUKOU, Nike standing right erecting trophy; H below left wing, AX in field between Nike and trophy. Cf. SC 173.12; cf. ESMS Tr. 62-89; cf. ESM 417; SNG Spaer -; Houghton -. Near EF, lightly toned. ($5000)

From the Robert Weimer Collection. Ex Waddell FPL 28 (16 March 1988), no. 136 (and cover coin).

Although the weight and die axis conform to Susa standards, the style is radically varied from the relatively refined style of Susa. Nonetheless, the artwork and metal quality are excellent for a local imitation.
