JULIUS CAESAR. 49-48 BC. AR Denarius (3.86 g, 2h). Military mint travelling with Caesar. CAESAR in exergue, elephant walking right, trampling on serpent / Simpulum, sprinkler, axe (surmounted by a wolf's head), and priest's hat. Crawford 443/1; CRI 9; Sydenham 1006; Kestner 3516; BMCRR Gaul 27; RSC 49. Good VF, medium gray and iridescent peach toning, an obverse die break and die rust in the exergue, a light cleaning scratch above the elephant. A bold elephant. ($500)
