From the John Davis Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 47 (16 September 1998), lot 2255 (incorrectly listed as 1402).The city of Aachen, capital city of Charlemagne and subsequent Holy Roman emperors, was the first European entity to issue regularly dated coinage, with the first dated groschen appearing between 1372 and 1375 under Count Wilhelm II. The 1404 groschen has two varieties of coats-of-arms, with the right facing eagle being scarcer, only appearing this year.
