RUSSIA. Alexei Mikhailovich. 1645-1676. AR Yefimok (Jefimok) (26.74 g, 9h). Dated 1655. A leewendaalder of West Frisia, dated 1632, countermarked on obverse with two punches: horseman right with monogram below in dotted circle (Type II) and date in plain rectangle (Type II). Coin: Delmonte 836; KM 14.1; Countermarks: cf. Efimki 115-117 (earliest recorded leewendaalder with c/m is 1640); Kaim I p. 126-129; cf. KM 421 (Gelderland). Coin VF, c/ms good VF, toned. ($600)
Ex Willy Fuchs Collection (Sotheby's, 24-25 April 1997), lot 5.There are three varieties of genuine date punches on the yefimiki. Type I is in a rectangle about 12x6mm, and is distinctive in that the lower limb of the last "5" is usually missing. For Type II the punch is about 12x7mm, with similar style numbers. Type III is distinctly different – the punch is longer, about 14x5.5mm, and the numbers are small and oval, usually obscured by die breaks. This coin is overstruck on the date punch, and it appears to be a Type II over Type I. In addition, while the horseman punches seem to have been prepared using the same matrix, the dies fall into two groups, Type I with small circle (about 13mm) and Type II with larger circle (about 17mm).
