RUSSIA. Nicholas I /Alexander II. 1825-1855-1881. AR Proof Ruble. St. Petersburg mint; Nikolai Iossa, mintmaster. Dated 1855. Double-headed imperial eagle with crown above, holding sceptre and orb, shield of St. George on breast with six provincial coats-of-arms on wings / Crown above legend, all in wreath of laurel and oak. Bitkin 235(NI)/45(AII); Uzdenikov 1720; Severin 3631 (NI)/3638(AII); Davenport 283; KM 168.1. In NGC slab, graded PF65. ($4000)

Nicholas I died on 2 March 1855. Although proposals have been made regarding the varieties of the anonymous 1855 coinage and how to divide them between the reigns, there appear to be no solid criteria for doing so.
