HANOVER. George III. 1760-1820. Æ Bank of England Dollar Trial Strike (33.72 g). ND (1811). GEORGIUS DEI GRATIA REX., laureate and draped bust left; five berries on wreath, *•* on bust truncation (Bust K) / Blank. Linecar & Stone 143; Davis 39. Choice EF, a few nicks, slight die rust and slight die crack. Extremely rare. ($500)

Ex Marian A. Sinton Collection (Classical Numismatic Group 53, 15 March 2000), lot 2343.

Linecar & Stone describe the known specimens as being bronzed lead, while Davis uses the generic term "copper". Two specimens are recorded by Linecar & Stone, one in the Cokayne collection, the other in the Lingford collection. The Lingford specimen (Glendining, 24 October 1950, lot 672) is paired with a reverse trial strike, both described as "struck on thin lead flans, coppered" and not illustrated. The present piece is 3.5mm thick, and it seems unlikely that it is the same type as the Lingford specimen. The Cokayne specimen (Glendining, 17 July 1946, lot 34) is also not illustrated, with insufficient information to determine its type, or whether it is the present coin.
