CILICIA, Flaviopolis. Maximinus I and Maximus. 235-238 AD. Æ 32mm (23.13 g, 6h). Dated CY 163 (235/6 AD). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right of Maximinus, vis-a vis radiate and draped bust of Maximus left / Serapis seated facing, sacrificing over altar and holding cornucopiae; at his feet an amphora and a basin. SNG Levante Supp. 368 (this coin); SNG France 2196. Fine, brown and tan patina.
The objects at the feet of Serapis are an oil amphora and a luter, or wash basin. These items were used by athletes, and thus this coin would be an overlooked games-related piece, and Serapis is filling the role of gymnasiarch, or official in charge of the games.
