Sold for $2950. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ETRURIA, Volaterrae. Circa 230-220 BC. Æ Aes Grave Dupondius (73mm, 257.11g, 6h). Janiform head wearing pointed petasos / FELA-ODI retrograde (Etruscan Velathri) around club with II. Thurlow-Vecchi 85; Haeberlin pl. 83, 1-6; HN Italy 109a. Fine, obverse a pale green while the reverse is a dark green with some encrustation. Very rare.

Although there was a hoard of aes grave from Volaterrae dispersed by Münzen und Medaillen in the early 1970s, apparently there were not many examples of this type as the number of extant specimens in 1979 when Thurlow and Vecchi published their work was only nine.
