LUCANIA, Poseidonia. Circa 470-445 BC. AR Nomos (8.03 g, 11h). Poseidon advancing right, wielding trident overhead / Bull standing left in circular incuse. Cf. SNG ANS 651; HN Italy 1114. Good VF.
SNG ANS 651 has the same types and ethnic varieties as this coin, but is from the earlier groups with a more compact style. Also, the ethnic on the obverse is usually in a straight line, but on the present specimen it curves downward with the contour of the die’s edge. Our coin clearly falls towards the end of this series, circa 445 BC.
