LUCANIA, Sybaris. Circa 453-448 BC. AR Nomos (8.03 g, 11h). Poseidon advancing right, preparing to throw trident held overhead; to right, bird flying right / Bull standing right. Kraay,
Coinage pl. III, 9 = SNG Fitzwilliam 580 (same dies); HN Italy 1743. Good VF. Extremely rare, one of approximately six known.
After the destruction of Sybaris II in 475/0 BC, refugees are thought to have settled in Poseidonia, one of the cities that contributed to the foundation of Sybaris III in 453 BC. The obverse type is copied from Poseidonia's nomoi, and probably serves to commemorate the aid which that city provided to the Sybarites.
