SICILY, Messana. 425-421 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.16 g, 12h). Charioteer driving biga of mules right; above, Nike flying right, crowning mules; two dolphins in exergue / Hare springing right; below dolphin right. Cf. Caltabiano 500/499 (D202’/R207); SNG ANS 361 (same rev. die). EF, reverse slightly off-center, die rust on obverse.
For her die combination 500, Caltabiano lists the obverse die as D202’. Although she lists this same obverse die for previous combinations, she notes that by the time it was used for combination 500, it had been re-engraved in some areas, resulting in such anomalies as the number of reins changing from three to two. On the present coin, this re-engraved die has been combined with a different reverse die than that listed for combination 500.
