KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.12 g, 7h). Babylon mint. Struck under Peithon, circa 315-311 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, monogram in wreath; monogram below throne. Price 3722. Good VF.



The monogram below the throne was recut in this reverse die, leaving traces of the monogram of Price 3719.

In 315 BC, Antigonos I Monophthalmos forced Seleukos I to flee from his satrapy in Babylon, and replaced him with Peithon, a Macedonian who had served under Alexander III as satrap of southern India. After Alexander’s death, Peithon had been appointed to the satrapy of Media.
