KINGS of LYDIA. Alyattes II. Late 7th century BC. EL 1/3 Stater – Trite (4.71 g). Sardes mint. Head of roaring lion right, sun with no rays on forehead / Double incuse square punch. Weidauer Group XV, 67-70 var. (four rays on sun; same rev. punches). VF. Interesting engraver’s error.

The obverse die cutter apparently forgot to add the four rays to the sun which are canonical for this issue.
