Hadrian. AD 117-138. AR Cistophorus (10.86 g, 7h). Uncertain mint B(?). Struck after AD 128. Bare head right /
Aquila between two
signa. Unpublished. Good VF, some flatness. Overstruck on uncertain type.
This reverse type was employed at Pergamum, Eumeneia, and uncertain mint B. There is also an “unattributed” variety of this type (Metcalf 425). None of the published examples have this obverse type, and the refined style of this piece is significantly different, such that an attribution to any of the known mints for this reverse type is unlikely. However, the unusual form of the obverse legend, AVGVSTVS HADRIANVS P P, only recorded on issues of uncertain mint B, suggest this is a heretofore unknown issue of that mint.
