Contorniates. Late 4th century AD. Æ Contorniate (35mm, 24.41 g, 5h). Bust of Omphale left, wearing lion’s skin of Hercules, resting club on elevated right arm / Hercules standing right, wrestling centaur Nessus; club to left and tree below forepart of Bull. Alföldi,
Kontorniat tf. 23, 10 (same obverse). Near VF, brown and green patina with traces of lighter green overtones. Extremely rare.
Alföldi lists only three specimens of this type, all of which are in public collections: one in Venice; the second in Vienna; and the third in the Haag (now Leiden).
