[Jewelry and Ornaments]
ROMAN. Gold girdle ornament. Circa 3rd-4th century AD. Diameter 28mm, weight 5.45 g. A thin gold roundel decorated with repoussé design of a facing female bust, possibly winged and thus of Victory. The roundel is set within a deep gold bezel with a cable frame and two loops for attachment to the girdle chain. The edge of the roundel is rather irregular, and may have been removed from another object before being mounted in this frame. Good condition, the forehead and nose of the woman flattened where they projected above the frame.
From the Marc Poncin Collection
A girdle or chest piece ornamented with gold jewels and coins would have been a presentation gift to an important dignitary and guest.
