[Jewelry and Ornaments] ROMAN. Gold and silver hair pin. Circa 2nd century AD. Height 12cm A costly woman’s hair pin done in silver and gold, the shaft of good quality silver with a finial in the form of an ornate gold amphora with ribbed body and strap handles. Inset in the top is a deep red cabochon garnet. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, Roman Jewelry, 279. Good condition, the silver still solid, the gold slightly toned with slight scuff marks. A superb example of Roman jewelry.
