ROMAN. Italy. Pottery oil lamp. Circa 1st century AD. Length 10.5cm. Mold-formed with central motif of a female sphinx seated left on low basis, placing paw on amphora filled with grapes, all within concentric framework. Fill hole on discus, tiny vent hole on frame, spatulate spout with volutes, no handle. Cream colored clay with metallic brown slip. Choice condition, sharp impression.
