[Oil lamps]
ROMAN. Italy. Pottery oil lamp. Circa 1st century AD. Length 10.5cm. Mold-formed with central motif in a deeply concave discus, two herons in a field of papyrus plants, one pinning down a snake, all in concentric frame. Fill hole on discus, tiny vent hole on tongue of frame, spatulate spout with volutes, no handle. Light brown colored clay with brown and red slip. Choice condition, encrusted. Attractive Nilotic scene.
