[Oil lamps]
ROMAN. Italy. Pottery oil lamp. Circa 1st century AD. Length 13cm. Mold-formed with central motif of a servant filling a krater from a wine amphora. Potter’s mark M.NOV IVSTI on base. Fill hole on discus, tiny vent hole on edge, vestigial nubs on sides, ring handle. Pinkish colored clay with brick-red slip. Cf. Djuric,
Anawati Collection 129 for potter. Choice condition, well preserved slip. A simple genre scene, but one that does not seem to appear elsewhere on oil lamps.
From the Dr. Robert B. Beckett Collection. Ex Antiqua XI (2002), Lot A22u.
