[Oil lamps]
ROMAN. Syria-Palestine. Pottery oil lamp. Circa 2nd century AD. Length 8.5cm. Mold-formed pentalychnos with central scallop motif. Fill hole on discus, five nozzles, ring handle. A pseudo potter’s mark impressed in the base; •••• in rectangle. Pinkish-red colored clay with brick red slip on upper surface. Choice condition, heavy carbon deposits around nozzles. An unusually small size for a multi-wick lamp, and not very practical; it would have burned up the lamp oil very quickly.
