[Pottery]
ITALY. Villanovan Culture. Pottery Stamnos. Circa 8th-7th century BC. Height 16cm, width across handles 19cm. Flattened ovoid body on short flared ring base, sharply in-turned ridged shoulder with straight-sided neck. Horizontal handles with knob decorations. Rough gray-brown clay with dark brown slip. Good condition, slip worn, chip on mouth.
Villanovan is the term used to describe Etruscan culture of the 9th-7th century BC, just prior to its greatest florescence. Most of our knowledge of the period comes from the extensive grave finds in the Apennine region, including the distinctive pottery.
