[Bronze objects]
ROMAN. Bronze figural furniture fitting. Circa 1st-2nd century AD. Height 10.5cm, length 6.5cm. Socketed furniture fitting, possibly for a chair arm, with a terminal protome of a silenus. Half length bust, modeled in the round, of an old balding silenus, his head wreathed in ivy and flowers. Heavy furrowed brows, pug nose, mustache and corkscrew beard portrayed with life-like intensity. Set on prow-shaped basis, with projecting rear socket to join and peg a wood frame at right angles. Cast, with incised details of extraordinary vitality showing the disciple of Bacchus in a pose that might be described as pensive inebriation. A fine dark green patina with patches of red-brown, bust in choice state of preservation, a few fragments broken out of the base.
