141, Lot: 68. Estimate $100.
Sold for $206. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

IONIA, Phokaia. Circa 6th-5th centuries BC. AR Hemiobol(?) (6mm, 0.40 g). Head of a ketos right; seal (?) below / Rough incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. Near VF, toned. Rare.

Ex Peus 376 (29 October 2003), lot 388; Künker 20 (30 September 1991), lot 162.

This coin is attributed to Phokaia in the Peus sale where the head on the obverse is identified as either a griffin or a ketos. It is certain that the head is not a griffin, at least not as they appear on coins of Phokaia, and it does appear more like the head of the ketos as seen on coins of Kindya in Caria.
