SAMARIA. Mazaeus.Circa 375-333 BC. AR Obol (10mm, 0.75 g). Galley left / Persian king slaying lion. Meshorer & Qedar 96. Near VF, crude strike, a little porous.

These designs are derived from the silver coins of Sidon. The name in Aramaic on the reverse is clearly that of Mazaios, the last Persian satrap of the region (344-334 BC). This type is likely to be among the last to be struck in Samaria, since the local coinage appears to have ceased with the arrival of Alexander the Great.
