MACEDON, Uncertain. Circa 510-480 BC. AR Diobol (10mm, 1.28 g). Forepart of Pegasos right / Incuse square, divided by four lines intersecting at offset angles to create five compartments. Cf. Peus 376 (29 October 2003), lot 253 (similar obol attributed to Therma); otherwise unpublished. VF, toned, porous. Rare.

The Pegasos forepart is a frequent type at coins attributed to Argilos or Therma in Macedon. Two characteristics of this particular coin, however, make either attribution doubtful. First, both wings of Pegasos are visible on the obverse, where only one is visible on all denominations of those definitely attributed to either city. Second, the unusual incuse pattern on the reverse is not found on any coins of these cities. Therefore, while an attribution to Macedon is certain, the mint of this type remains uncertain.
