ARABIA PETRAEA, Bostra.Trajan. AD 98-117. Æ 30mm (21.02 g). Dated Cos. 5 (AD 103-111). Laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder / DHMARC EXUPAT E, Head of Zeus-Ammon right. Kindler, Bostra 5; BMC Galatia pg. 59, 112 (Caesarea); Lindgren I 1703 (Cyrene; this coin). Near VF, dark brown patina with some earthen encrustation.

From the Garth R. Drewry Collection; Ex Henry Lindgren Collection, 1703.

This coin has seen a number of varying attributions over the decades, but Arie Kindler argues convincingly for Bostra, where the III Legion Cyrenaica was stationed after being transferred eastward during Trajan’s Arabian campaign; thus the appearance of Zeus-Ammon, protector god of Cyrenaica.
