ISLANDS off THRACE, Thasos. Circa 500-449 BC. AR Hemiobol (0.47 g). Dolphin left, two pellets below / Incuse square punch. Unpublished. EF, light toning around devices.
The dolphin is the common type on fractions of Thasos in the period of coinage dated to circa 435-411 BC, and pellets are used to denote denomination. While this piece also uses these conventions, the incuse is not quadripartite, standard in this later period, but a rough square incuse, which suggests that it was struck in an earlier period of coinage.
