KINGS of PAEONIA. Audoleon. Circa 315-286 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.10 g, 8h). Astibus or Damastion mint. Struck in the name of Alexander III of Macedon, circa 300-286 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; trident in left field. Price -; cf. Waggoner, Reflections obv. die 17. Good VF, toned, a couple light cleaning marks on reverse. Unpublished with trident symbol.

This symbol represents a new issue in the series of Audoleon’s Alexander-type coinage. Obverse die 17 is known to have been used in issues 2 and 3, with star and wreath symbol, respectively. An examination of the photographed examples reveals that the die is in its latest state when it struck the present coin. Thus the new trident issue should be placed just after issue 3.
