LOKRIS, Lokris Opuntii. Circa 500-480 BC. AR Obol (0.81 g, 3h). Amphora / Aeginetan style skew pattern incuse; O in lower left incuse. Traité III 424; Imhoof-Blumer, “Griechische Münzen,” NC 1895, I, 3. Good VF. Very rare.

This interesting obol is similar to those issued in nearby Orchomenos in Boeotia (cf. BCD Boiotia 196-198). On their obverse, both have one of their traditional civic symbols, a wheat grain at Orchomenos and an amphora at Lokris (the symbol appearing on all her later obols). On the reverse, both use the Aeginetan-style skew pattern with a portion of their ethnic in the incuses. Because of this strong similarity, this issue of Locris has been dated to the same period as the Orchomenos obols.
