Valentinian I. AD 364-375. AR Siliqua (2.21 g, 12h). Siscia mint. Struck circa AD 375. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VOT/XV/MVLT/XX in four lines within wreath; *//SISCPS. RIC IX - (cf. RIC IX 19c for Valentinian II); RSC - (cf. RSC 74Ab for Valentinian II). EF, gray and iridescent cabinet toning, a faint hairline on the obverse. Rare.
Ex Holway Hoard (Taunton, Somerset, 1821).
This was probably one of the last issues of Valentinian I, as it employs his bust and the characteristic break in his obverse legend, but shows the Siscia mint-mark of Valentinian II. An intriguing transitional issue, almost certainly struck about November AD 375.
