Heraclius. 610-641. Æ Follis (28mm, 13.70 g). “Oriental mint”. Dated RY 3? (612/13). Crowned and draped standing figures of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine, each holding globus cruciger; cross between / Large M; A/[KVZ]. cf. SB 840. Near VF, black patina with earthen encrustation around the devices. Overstruck on a coin of Justin II, year 5.

From the Henry Chitwood Collection.

This coin is part of an extensive series of imitative folles produced in Syria after Heraclius closed the official Antioch mint in 610. They were probably struck up to the time of the Arab conquest in the 640’s.
