148, Lot: 441. Estimate $75.
Sold for $86. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Michael II the Amorian, with Theophilus. 820-829. Æ Follis (22mm, 6.49 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Crowned facing busts of Michael, wearing chlamys and Theophilus, wearing loros / Large M, flanked by XXX and NNN; cross above; A below. DOC III 8; SB 1618 (Michael I and Theophylactus). VF, thick green patina, a bit rough.

From the Robert Kutcher Collection.

Sear rejected the DOC attribution to Michael II and Theophilus, preferring the first Michael. However, specimens are known with the expanded name of the junior emperor- EOFIL, which can only be Theophilus. The problem, of course, is that this means there are no known folles for the joint reign of Michael I and Theophylactus.
