CELTIC, Northeast Gaul. Suessiones. Circa 1st century BC. Æ 17mm (2.18 g). Janiform helmeted heads; pellet in annulet before each / Fantastic quadruped (griffin?) standing left; three pelleted annulets above, one below. CCCBM III 80-1; Scheers Class II, 154. Good VF, hard green patina. œ
CCCBM and Scheers identify the beast on the reverse as a lion, which it may be. However, the present specimen strongly suggests it is a griffin.
