151, Lot: 196. Estimate $500.
Sold for $700. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Petillius Capitolinus. 43 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.97 g). Eagle standing right on thunderbolt / Hexastyle temple with ornamented pediment; F S across fields. Crawford 487/2c; CRI 174b; Sydenham 1152; Petillia 4. EF, toned, small ‘x’ scratched into obverse field.

The letters SF (sacris faciundis), or as on this coin, FS, indicate the Petillii were hereditary caretakers of the temple of Jupiter. Horace mentions a man of this name, accused of stealing the (presumably gold) crown from the statue of Jupiter, who escaped punishment due to his close relationship with Octavian.
