Bishop Stephen of Maiuma of Ascalon. Early 6th century AD. PB Bulla (seal) (24mm, 13.71 g). +CT
EFA NOU / +
EP ICKO
POU. VF, brownish patina. Rare Holy Land seal.
The simple inscriptions on this seal place it early in the Byzantine period- 5th-6th century. It was found in the near east, and these two facts make it likely that the seal was made for Stephen of Maiuma (the port of Ascalon, made a separate See in the early 6th century). Stephen is recorded as participating in the synod at Jerusalem in 518.
