THRACE, Deultum. Julia Mamaea. Augusta, AD 222-235. Æ 20mm (3.76 g). Diademed and draped bust right / Telesphorus, wearing hooded cloak, standing facing. Yourokova -; SNG Bulgaria -; Mouchmov -. Good VF, smooth green patina. Youroukova records the reverse type for other reigns (cf. her 86 for Diadumenian) but not for Mamaea.

Telesphorus was the son of Aesclepius, and as his name indicated, he “brought fulfillment” to the ill, representing the final healing phase of illness or injury. His cult did not become widespread until the Roman period, where temples were erected in his name at Epidarus and Pergamon. He appears also to have been known by the names Acesis (Cure) and Euamerion (Prosperity).
