Postumus. Romano-Gallic Emperor, AD 260-269. BI Antoninianus (21mm, 4.30 g). Treveri (Trier) mint. Struck AD 266. Radiate and cuirassed bust right / Aesclepius standing facing, head left, leaning on serpent-entwined staff; globe at feet. RIC V 326; AGK 80; RSC 336a. VF, nice silver, well struck.
One of the last appearances of Aesclepius on an ancient coin. He is shown again on a few antoniniani of Carausius, and then fades from view. It is difficult to determine if there was still an active interest in the cult of Aesclepius at this late date, or whether his appearance is simply an antiquarian display of one of the old gods.
