Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Follis (4.02 g, 6h). London mint. Struck circa AD 310-312. CONSTANTINVS P AVG, laureate, helmeted, and cuirassed bust left, holding Victory on globe in right hand / SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI, Sol standing left, raising right hand, holding globe in left; star to right; PLN. RIC VII 237-9 var. (bust type); DOC -; Cohen -; H. Huvelin, “Le trésor de Saint-Colombier-en-Sarzeau,”
TM II, 3606 (this coin). Good VF, brown surfaces, small flat spot on obverse, weak strike on reverse. Apparently unique.
Ex Trésor de Saint-Colombier-en-Sarzeau, 3606.
This is apparently the sole example of this bust type used in conjunction with the Soli Invicto series. This bust type itself is extremely rare, known only from a few examples with the COMITI-AVGG NN reverse type. The Saint-Colombier-en-Sarzeau Hoard was discovered in 1976, and, among other issues, it contained a large number of folles from the London mint with militaristic bust types, including several that were unknown before.
